What is Polyurethane Resin?
Polyurethane resin is a type of polymer made by combining polyols and isocyanates. These resins fall into two categories: cold polyurethane resins and hot polyurethane resins. Cold polyurethane resins react at room temperature and are therefore suitable for applications that do not require oven or furnace curing, such as flooring and insulation. Hot-cure polyurethane resins react at high temperatures and are a good choice for applications that require high strength and durability, such as automotive parts and home appliances. This type of resin bonds well to all surfaces.
Properties of polyurethane resin
Polyurethane resin applications
- in the production of all types of floor coverings such as polyurethane floor coverings and epoxy-polyurethane floor coverings
- In the production of all kinds of heat and sound insulation such as polyurethane foam insulation and polyurethane spray insulation.
- In the production of all kinds of automobile parts such as seats, dashboards and bumpers
- In the production of all kinds of household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and washing machines
- In the production of all types of coatings such as polyurethane paints and polyurethane varnishes
- In the production of all types of adhesives such as two-component polyurethane adhesives
- In the production of various foams such as soft foams and hard foams
- In the production of various elastomers such as synthetic rubbers and silicones
Advantages of using polyurethane resin
High strength High chemical resistance Abrasion resistance High flexibility Thermal and sound insulation Storage conditions Polyurethane resins are divided into two general categories, hot and cold resins, each with their own storage conditions. Cold polyurethane resins: This type of resin should be kept at a temperature between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius. The ambient humidity should be between 30% and 70%. The resin should be stored in closed containers away from direct sunlight. The shelf life of cold polyurethane resins is generally 6 to 12 months.
Hot polyurethane resins:
This type of resin should be kept at a temperature between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. The humidity of the environment should be between 30% and 70%. The resin should be stored away from direct sunlight and in closed containers. The service life of hot polyurethane resins is generally 3 to 6 months.
Safety tips
Polyurethane resin is a toxic and hazardous substance and should be handled with care. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear suitable gloves, goggles and a mask when working with resin. Keep resin out of reach of children and pets. Avoid mixing different resins such as polyamide resin and polyurethane resin.. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully before using resin. Resin fumes are toxic and should be used in well-ventilated areas. Resin is flammable and should be kept away from heat and sparks. If resin comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and consult a physician.
